Bought a top of the line Garmin was $350. I did exactly what you suggested when I found that out. Just as a matter of interest was told on here that Subaru map updates for almost identical head unit costing $700. Wow at $220.00 they must have come down a lot they were $350.00 18 months ago & you would be very lucky if the map update you get is at least 12 months out of date when you buy it.(anyone paying that has got rocks in the head). The only reliable place to get map updates is from a Toyota dealership. Toyota navigation systems for Europe cannot use the same map updates as the navigation systems for North America. Does anyone have a better or cheaper way of updating the maps on the satnav of a 2016 SR5 other than handing over $220 to,the dealership please? Might be cheaper to replace multimedia unit and just by a Garmin GPS from jb hifi for $100 and get lifetime map updates. In Europe an owner can download map updates to an SD card but I wasn't aware that has become possible in North America.
